Everybody's gotta have something that keeps 'em busy...

what katster is trying to accomplish in the next little while.

Everybody's got goals, everybody's got their plans for how to be famous before they die. I don't claim these things will make me famous, but...hey, they're things to do...

Project Bookworm

This is my attempt to learn mySQL. The best way I know how to do it is to throw myself into it, and as soon as school quits dragging on me, and lets me figure out what I want to do, I intend to have more there than the logo and a basic web page.

Project Bookworm, as should be fairly obvious by the name, is supposed to become my book catalog. I have a lot of books, and I'm tired of ending up with three or four copies of something. Eventually, I'd like to be able to walk into a bookstore with my Palm or cellphone, find a book I like, and query Project Bookworm to see if I have it.

This is a project that could take a while. To follow its progress, look at bookworm.retstak.org.

gathering more and more letters after my name...

In my first year of Shasta College, in an effort to keep busy, I enrolled in the Cisco networking academy. On July 6th, 2001, I went to take my certification test, and gained the right to note that I am now Cisco Certified. I earned a CCNA.

In my second year at Shasta College, in an effort to keep busy, I enrolled in the MCSE classes. Although I have not gotten around to taking the Microsoft certifications yet, I intend to sometime in the near future.

Also, I've earned the right to say I have a Bachelor of Arts in History from UC Berkeley. Which leads right into my next project...

Becoming more edjucamated

I have just finished my first year of graduate school at the School of Information Management and Systems at the University of California, Berkeley. It's been very hard but very rewarding, and if all goes well, I will graduate in May of 2004 with a master's degree. After that, who knows?

Winning a Hugo before I'm 30...

Lastly, in my spare time, I'm an aspiring author. Someday, I hope to win a Hugo or a Nebula, the two highest awards in science fiction. This right now isn't as pressing a priority as the others above, but it's something I would like to do.
