Who, what, where, when, WHY!

the nitty gritty technical details that make up retstak.org

Well, it's the obligitary "My God, what the hell did I just surf into?" webpage.

why retstak?

Why not?

actually, by the time I had the cash to buy a domain name and decided on what name I actually wanted to use, I discovered that some unscrupulous domain name squatter had bought up katster.[com|org|net] and pointed them at some random webpage which read "katster is coming." It's since gone, but the domain names were still registered. (I have since acquired katster.org, but this domain name predates that one.) And since katster is the nick I've gone by since I first showed up on these computer thingys...what was I to do?

Enter alternate IRC nicks. the two I most commonly used were kjatster, which is katster with a j inserted between the k and the a, and retstak, which is...well read it backwards. kay aye tee ess tee ee are. Hey! And nobody had claimed that one.

So I've got a cool domain name for about half the work. ;)

who's the evil genius behind this website?

That would be me. Katrina A. "Kat" Templeton, part time philosopher and looney. I also go by katster as I traverse the net.

For more about me, check out The short and boring life of katster.

sandwich.net? What kind of crazy name is that?

Well...that one wasn't my doing. Blame this guy.

He says he did it to pay homage to Monty Python and Hitchhiker's Guide, both of which rock. But it's also hosting home to retstak.org as well as many other pages (go look at my friends page if you don't believe me), and the system administrator is a really cool guy. Once upon a time, he ran a pay ISP, but now he's just doing this to be nice to his friends.

Anyway, you want to give him the big bucks for the outstanding job he's doing, and you can do that. Remember, only you can support good content on the web.

You're running that godless Linux, aren't you?

Damn straight it's powered by penguins.

This webpage is hosted off herring.sandwich.net, a dual processor P3 box, with all the goodies you can imagine. It's running a custom build of linux (which jrenken likes to refer to as XellOS), and the web server is, of course, Apache. We've also got perl and php.

The webpages were designed in vim, on a AMD Athlon box (called prufrock, after the TS Eliot poem) running Debian Linux. The retstak.org logo was done up using script-fu in GIMP.

Some page editing was done using Textpad on an IBM Thinkpad (named Macavity) with an Intel Pentium 4 processor running Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

None of that proprietary Microsoft FrontPage junk here!

You couldn't have done this all by yourself!

Well, actually, most of it, I did. But there's always thanks that need to go out.

jrenken, the system administrator, for setting me up with an account and always being great when there are problems.

Kyle, for showing me a nifty trick with tables that got me to finally settle on the retstak.org page design.

the denizens of #spork, on irc.sandwich.net, who were just in general good at looking at the page and offering suggestions, especially Ari, Shad, and DarkSide.

That's it? You mean you don't have any more answers?

Gimme more questions, and I'll give you more answers. Mail 'em to katster@retstak.org .
